As an Erasmus student in Germany, I had the chance to travel to Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, twice and explore different aspects of the city.

Schloßplatz (Palace Square) |
Most of all I do remember enjoying the "
Schloßplatz", which is actually the largest square in Stuttgart in the heart of the city. This place is filled with gardens, lawns and flower beds thus making the palace square and the Upper Palace Gardens an ideal place to linger. And for those who prefer to celebrate than to relax, keep in mind that open concerts are regularly held there.
Stuttgart, may not have a huge city centre, but that is what makes it a great city to walk into and it's "
Schloßgarten" (gardens in
Palace square), a great place to relax on a sunny day.

Stuttgart - City Centre |
However, if you prefer shopping, the 1,2km long promenade, named "
Königstraße", the central path of the city, is filled with shops of every taste to keep you satisfied.
In contrary to the cheap shopping centre, I remember that restaurants were quite expensive in the centre of the city, so me and a friend of mine ended up eating in a Mexican Restaurant (I believe it was called El Chico, but I couldn't say I was fully satisfied from the food and its prices).
Except from the Staatstheater near the train station, the palace itself and the many churches inside Stuttgart, the city is best suitable for those who want to relax, go for shopping, have a cup of coffee or explore a different lifestyle.

Mercedes-Benz Museum (Stuttgart) |
Nevertheless, if you belong to those who prefert to go for sightseeing, I would suggest you to go to
Mercedes Benz Museum, which is located in Bad Cannstatt (you take S1 until NeckarPark. As a student, I payed only 4.00 Euro (half price) to entry and got an Audio Guide to accompany me on the trip around the museum. This was quite usefull as it unrolled the history of almost every exhibit on display. And if you visit the Museum, you'll start from the top of the building (it's about 6 stories, so prepare to spend at least 3 hours inside) and then walk down the cylindrical building to get in touch with the history of the automobile, from the very first horseless carriages to modern limousines. I found this museum perfect, because it doen't just display or advertise the Mercedes-Benz brand, but because it carries you through time and is dedicated to the Automobile history in general. Furthermore, each section is connected to a historical period, which in turn, is captured in a video of about 10 minutes long in order to sum up what one needs to know about Automobile.

Stuttgart - Eckensee (Schloßplatz) |
[If you do not like Mercedes-Benz, you can visit Porsche Museum instead, which is located in Zuffenhausen, Porscheplatz 1. However, since I haven't been there, I don't know if it worths the visit and if it is better or worse than Mercedes-Benz Museum.]

Well this is Stuttgart in general... It's a city you have to explore yourself in order to get to know it! If you are in Erasmus or stay nearby, do not miss the chance to visit and find out yourself the beauties of this city.
