Shanghai the city of the future

Shanghai, China

My last travel took me to Shanghai, China. To tell you the truth, when I first landed i thought that I took the wrong flight and ended up somewhere in Russia. The buildings around Pudong airport were all gray and the feeling of disappointment slowly started to emerge. After a passport and visa check at the airport we decided to take the famous Maglev train which hits speeds up to 400 km/h. The train ride surely made me feel more awake after the long flight.

One bad thing about the Maglev train is that it is very expensive to ride, the ride takes only 8 minutes however, it will cost you about 100 Yuan per person. The metro is also connected to the airport and will cost you about 6-12 Yuan depending on how far you are going.
When it comes to finding accommodation in Shanghai, I really recommend staying at the Rock & Wood hostel which, as decent prices and the basic necessities. Rock & Wood also offers western breakfast which is great as you might get tired of eating rice and noodles for every meal.
One thing that absolutely did not bother me but could bother some people was the presence of animals in the bar where they serve the food. Other than that the hostel was top notch, and the staff was very friendly.
Ok.... enough about accommodation and cats hanging at the bar. We are in Shanghai for crying out loud!
This city is simply amazing! Never in my life have I seen anything this amazing. When walking around in the city it feels like you have traveled about 50 years into the future.
Most people think that the only thing to see in Shanghai are the skyscrapers. The Skyscrapers are amazing and very futuristic, however, the city has very much to offer.

The pictures above show the narrow streets of the french district of Shanghai, as any tourist location, this is a very pricey part of the city so I would not recommend that you eat anything here. This place is, however, worth a visit as it is very beautiful and shows how Europeans have influenced the city.

The streets here are filled with shops and restaurants.

To our surprise we even managed to find a catholic church in this district

If you move a little more in the downtown direction you will eventually end up at the french concession. As I said, Shanghai is a very futuristic city and this can be seen as you walk by the river that divides the city in two sides. The photo below shows the business district from far away.
When we finally managed to break through all the traffic and crosswalks without being run over by scooters we ended up at the part of the city which lies on the opposite side of the business district, the French concession. Here you can get a really good view of the Shanghai skyline as you can see below.
I really recommend going here during the nighttime also as the city is very safe and you get to see an amazingly lit city skyline.
I also recommend going for a walk at Nanjing road as this area has a lot of shops, dancing elders who put on quite a show. There is also a lot of great street food in this part of the city, and as a certain man named Gordon Ramsay said, China has some of the best street food in the world.

If you ask me, sure China can be a strange place, but it felt like one of the safest places that I have been to and the people were very friendly and helpful even though most of them did not speak a single word of English. You can totally forget about getting a fork at a restaurant and do not get surprised if people want to take pictures with you in the street just because you are European, and certainly do not get shocked if you see one of these ladies on her badass motorcycle thing.
Shanghai is a great place to visit both for sightseeing and of course shopping!

  1. Great post. I had no idea Shanghai was so modern. Did you find it really crowded? I saw some pictures on the web the other day of the massive crowds at some of the major tourist sites and was appalled. But your pictures don't show unusual amounts of people. I've always thought China would be an interesting place to visit. Thanks for sharing.
